Popular Beverages and How They Affect Oral Health
December 30, 2020
With the millions of different beverage options out there, you likely consume multiple types on a daily basis. You’re probably familiar with the stain-causing capabilities of darker liquids, or the high fructose content of others. Keep reading to learn all of the details your local dentist has to share about behind popular beverages and oral health.
Seven Popular Beverages That Could Harm Your Teeth
If you’re like many people, you may not have ever put a whole lot of thought into the act of sleeping, however, there is quite a lot that goes into it. Here are the four stages of sleep that are negatively affected by sleep apnea and why they are so important.
Coffee and Tea: These two beverages might be great to help you get up and go, but they are often high in acid, and if not rinsed off properly, they can wear down your enamel. Darker teas and coffees are also often responsible for the yellowing of your smile.
Wine: You may think that you’re safe from stains with white wines but think again. Like coffee, wine contains high amounts of acid. It’s important to make sure you’re consuming plenty of water while you’re enjoying wine to avoid the dehydrating affects of alcohol that can cause a dry mouth, which can lead to the spread of bacteria.
Soft Drinks: This might be another obvious one, but the average can of cola contains over 30 grams of sugar! While sugar-free options might seem safer, it’s still important to limit your intake, as studies show no real difference between regular and sugar-free soft drink options.
Fruit Juice: It might be surprising to hear, but fruit juices are also something to look out for. Even natural juices without added sugar are still high in natural sugar and acid, so be sure to have some water on hand after enjoying your morning glass of orange juice.
Milk: This one might be another shocker, because you were probably encouraged to drink plenty of milk as a child so that you could grow up big and strong. While milk is full of essential vitamins and minerals that promote bone growth and health, it is also important not to go overboard when drinking it. The high lactose content in milk is essentially sugar, so make sure to practice good regular oral hygiene if you like to consume a lot of it.
Sparkling Water: This is a popular beverage type that many people opt for in lieu of soda to reduce sugar intake. Unfortunately, most sparkling waters pack a higher acid punch than orange juice!
Whatever your beverage of choice, the great news is you can still enjoy it in healthy moderation while caring for your teeth. Ask your dentist about some oral hygiene tips that can help you keep your smile shining brightly while enjoying your favorite drinks.
