How Seasonal Allergies Impact Your Oral Health
April 23, 2021
April showers bring… terrible allergies! If you get a stuffy nose, are constantly sneezing, and struggle with itchy eyes, then you know all too well how uncomfortable this season can be. What you may not know, however, is how allergy season can negatively impact your smile. Keep reading to learn a few ways it can affect your oral health!
#1. Toothaches from Sinus Pressure
When the wind kicks up and the flowers are blooming, irritants like pollen become airborne, causing many patients to experience sinus pressure. While the mucus build-up can be unpleasant for a number of reasons, it can also result in toothaches. All too often, patients dismiss the oral pain, which can allow the damage to spread. To prevent that from happening, make sure to implement a solid at-home oral hygiene routine, visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning, and schedule an appointment before then if discomfort begins to arise.
#2. Tooth Decay From Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is another symptom of allergies, which results in decreased saliva production and an increased risk of cavities. That’s because saliva plays an instrumental role in washing away food particles and neutralizing the acid in your mouth. Fortunately, you can help protect your teeth during allergy season (and year-round) by drinking plenty of water and continuing to practice good oral care habits, like flossing daily.
#3. Bad Breath From Post-Nasal Drip
Post-nasal drip refers to the mucus build-up in the back of your throat. Initially, this can result in unpleasant symptoms like coughing, but it can also result in a persistent, unpleasant odor. To keep your breath minty fresh, try chewing gum, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding foods that can contribute to the problem, like garlic. If the issue continues, get in touch with your dentist so they can see if there are any other contributors that need to be addressed.
Seasonal allergies are something over 35 million Americans struggle with. Fortunately, the subsequent symptoms, like dry mouth and sinus pressure, don’t have to leave a lasting mark on your oral health. Just make sure to drink plenty of water, implement a solid daily dental care regimen, and continue to visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning!
