5 Ways to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution to Floss More
January 11, 2023
During this time of the year, many people are starting to make headway on their New Year’s resolutions. From eating better to traveling more, there are an endless number of resolutions that people can make. If you aren’t sure what you want yours to be, why not make one for your smile? Many people don’t floss as often as they’re supposed to, so that’s a good place to start. Continue reading to learn five tips that will help you stick to your New Year’s resolution to floss more often.
Tip #1: Start Off Slow
Only about 16% of people end up succeeding with their New Year’s resolutions, and most of them end up giving up within six weeks. One reason for this is because they set overly ambitious goals. This is why it’s important to start out slow. Begin flossing a few times per week. Work your way up over time until you’re flossing every day.
Tip #2: Refresh Yourself on the Proper Technique
Flossing is not nearly as effective if you don’t do it right. Consider looking up videos of diagrams that show you the proper way to hold the floss, how much to use, and how to glide it between and around your teeth.
Tip #3: Use the Right Products
Using traditional dental floss can be difficult for those who have mobility issues, like arthritis. Consider using a water flosser instead. These devices shoot a stream of water to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth. If you decide to use traditional floss, be sure to pick the flavors and types that best fit you.
Tip #4: Remind Yourself to Floss
Half of the battle of flossing more often is remembering to do it. You may want to put a sticky note on your bathroom mirror to help yourself remember. You can also store your floss next to your toothbrush and toothpaste or set a reminder on your phone.
Tip #5: Make Flossing Convenient
If you have a busy life, it can be difficult to find time to floss your teeth. Though doing it after your last meal of the day is best, doing it at all is a step in the right direction. Make flossing more convenient by carrying dental floss in your purse backpack, or pocket. Floss between classes, during your lunch break, or any other chance you get.
