How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

You are truly committed to your dental health. You make sure to brush twice a day (and after eating sugary treats), you floss regularly, and you visit your dentist for regular checkups. The only thing you don’t do is change your toothbrush often enough. Over 75% of people don’t replace their toothbrushes or toothbrush heads every three months, whether it’s due to forgetfulness or just choosing not to. Some people think the suggestion is merely a way to get people to purchase dental items more often, but it’s not. Here are a few reasons you should change your toothbrush every three months.

Damaged Bristles

As a toothbrush gradually wears down, they get sharper and more jagged. Worn-out bristles can cause damage to your gums and lead to increased irritation or premature gum recession. Recessed gums can lead to damage of the teeth and gums, which may eventually result in tooth loss.

Bacteria Breeding Ground

If you’ve been sick or had a mouth infection, your toothbrush can cause you to get sick again. But even if you haven’t had a cold, germs and fungus can grow in your toothbrush if it doesn’t dry between uses. Bacteria can even transfer to nearby toothbrushes.

Reduced Cleaning Power

Damaged toothbrushes don’t remove plaque as effectively as the bristles on a new toothbrush. The bristles can’t reach into the crooks and crevices of your teeth, nor will they remove bacteria and plaque. Brushing twice a day and flossing will be pointless if your teeth are still covered with plaque.

If you have trouble remembering when it’s time to replace your toothbrush, you may consider writing a note in your calendar or setting a reminder on your phone. When replacing your toothbrush, think about your dental needs. Do a bit of research and take a time to read the packaging so you can get the right brush for you. If you’re still not sure, consult your dentist to determine what kind of toothbrush will help you accomplish your dental goals. Now, more than ever, it’s important to try and stay healthy. Replacing your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three months or sooner is a great way to give your immune system an advantage.
